Here is a list of projects that I’m working on. Contact me @ marichal@callutheran.edu if you’re a CLU student and you’d like to be part of the research team.

#TikTok Narrative Project I want to code TikTok videos on policy topics and compare and contrast how the two candidates for president are discussed. So for example, what videos come up when I search “Biden” and “Black Neighborhoods” vs. “Trump” and “Black Neighborhoods”… I want to code them for the topics that emerge from the most popular videos to see how TikTok conversations differ between candidates.

#You Tube Narrative Project I want to code YouTube videos from local news stations discussing a federal law called the “American Rescue Plan” that gave local governments funding for community projects. The plan was an initiative of the Biden administration and passed with only Democratic support. I want to see how the issues is discussed when local news stations talk about it.. who do they give credit to? does it matter what where the money is going or the context? For example, if the framing of the story is about how the money is being wasted, does that impact who gets credit from the local news.
